Tesla continues its innovation series and introduces the hands-free frunk opening function in the new 2024.32.3 update. This is another highlight following the introduction of hands-free trunk opening in spring 2024. Thanks to this innovation, owners of certain Teslamodels can conveniently open their frunk (front trunk) without manual intervention, further increasing convenience and user-friendliness.
Which vehicles benefit from hands-free frunk opening?
As with the introduction of hands-free trunk opening, this feature is only available on vehicles equipped with an ultra-wideband (UWB) chip. These models include the revised Model S, the new Model X and the Model 3 from model year 2024. These vehicles make it possible to Tesla, to precisely determine the exact position of the cell phone key and thus trigger the automatic opening of the trunk.
Owners of older Tesla-models without a UWB chip will unfortunately have to do without this function, as the hardware requirement is not met. Interestingly, the Cybertruck, which is also equipped with a UWB chip, is also expected to receive hands-free opening of the Frunk in one of the upcoming updates. With the 2024.32.3 update, this is possible according to Tesla this is now also possible.
How does hands-free Frunk opening work?
Hands-free opening of the Frunk works in a similar way to the existing trunk function. Owners of an iPhone 11 or newer in combination with a current version of the Tesla-app can simply stand in front of their vehicle, whereupon the Frunk is unlocked after an acoustic signal. On some models, the frunk even opens automatically after unlocking, while other vehicles still require manual closing.
However, the function is not activated by default. To use it, owners must go to the vehicle settings under Locks the option Hands-Free Frunk option manually.
No support for Android - not yet
Although Android users still have to do without support for UWB at the moment Tesla has announced that both hands-free trunk and hands-free frunk opening will be available in a future update for Android. This should please the Android community, as so far only iPhone users have been able to benefit from this practical function.
Additional features in update 2024.32.3: Improved recognition and "Exclude Home" function
Tesla has also improved the recognition of the cell phone key as part of the new update. This should ensure that the automatic trunk and trunk opening reacts more reliably and quickly when the owner approaches the vehicle from the front or rear.
In addition Tesla the update introduces the new Exclude Home-option. This function makes it possible to deactivate the automatic opening of the frunk and trunk near your own home. This is particularly practical for Tesla-owners who park their vehicle in a garage where there is a risk of the trunk or frunk opening unintentionally. The automatic opening doors for the Model X can now also be deactivated for your own home.
More comfort through new functions
With the 2024.32.3 update Tesla once again focuses on greater convenience and user-friendliness. The introduction of hands-free trunk opening is a sensible extension of the existing hands-free trunk opening and offers even more convenience for Tesla-owners. Together with the improved recognition of the cell phone key and the Exclude Home-option shows Tesla, that the company is continuously working to improve the driving experience for its customers.
