Tesla's FSD updates: Roadmap for autonomous driving functions & FSD v13

Tesla has recently released an updated roadmap for its FSD (Full Self-Driving) software, revealing the ambitious goals for the coming months. The planned updates are intended to improve the driving comfort, safety and autonomy of the Tesla-models even further. With FSD v13, many exciting innovations are on the horizon, which are being developed primarily for vehicles with the latest AI4 hardware.

FSD v13: The next generation of autonomy

Tesla relies on FSD v13 as a milestone in autonomous vehicle technology. This update will be available in particular for vehicles with AI4 hardware and is designed to massively increase the precision of object recognition and navigation by fully processing high-resolution video (36 FPS). Tesla assumes that these improvements will collision avoidance behavior and the navigation will be significantly improved.

New features in FSD v13 at a glance:

  • Full resolution of HW4 cameras for detailed environment detection.
  • Improved data processingThe model is three times larger and uses 4.2 times more data.
  • New arrival options: The vehicle can park automatically, park itself or stop in the driveway or garage.
  • Recognition of emergency vehiclesIn addition to visual recognition, FSD v13 will also process acoustic signals to better recognize emergency vehicles.

End-to-end AI for highway driving

Another highlight of the roadmap is the integration of a end-to-end AI model for the highway. Tesla plans for AI to take over all aspects of driving, from lane selection to brake control. This feature is currently being tested in North America for the Cybertruck and selected AI4 models in North America and will be available from v12.5.6 will be generally available for all vehicles with AI4.

Actually Smart Summon available worldwide

While Actually Smart Summon is already active in North America, other regions are still waiting for the update. Tesla announced that this feature will be rolled out gradually in other regions, probably in the upcoming major update, possibly Version 2024.44.

Improvements for older hardware (HW3)

Although the roadmap is mainly based on AI4 hardware hardware, there are also some updates for HW3 are also planned. These include an improved city driving functionality in FSD v12.5.x. These updates are intended to driving smoothness but the full highway AI model will probably not be available for HW3 for the time being.

Goal: FSD Unsupervised Feature Complete

Tesla's goal is to provide FSD with v13 as an "unsupervised feature complete", i.e. the vehicle should be able to navigate from the start to the target parking position without human intervention. Although this does not yet mean complete autonomy, the Tesla lays the foundation for the next step.

Outlook and release dates

FSD v13 will initially be released to Tesla-employees and will be gradually rolled out to the public, starting with FSD v13.3will be available to the public starting Thanksgiving. The continuous improvements demonstrate Tesla's commitment to take FSD to an autonomous level and to improve the mobility of the future mobility of the future.
