Is Tesla suspending battery production in the Gigafactory Grünheide for the time being?

Will Tesla put battery production in the Gigafactroy Shanghai on hold for the time being? The expansion of battery production on the premises of the Gigafactory Grünheide is already in full swing. It was only recently reported that the interior work is already underway and production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2023. The new 4680 battery cells are to be manufactured in battery production.

Now, however, it is reported that Tesla is rethinking battery production in Grünheide. The US company Tesla is suspending plans to manufacture battery cells in Germany in order to qualify for tax breaks in the manufacture of electric cars and batteries in the home market. The Wall Street Journal writes, citing sources familiar with the matter. US President Joe Biden recently announced new measures to reduce inflation. The so-called Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law by US President Joe Biden last month, offers tax breaks to EV manufacturers who source their batteries from the US. The law also grants some buyers a $7,500 tax credit if they purchase electric vehicles whose batteries meet certain origin requirements.

The sharp rise in energy costs, which are a lot higher in relation to prices in the USA, could also be a possible reason for Tesla to think so. It remains to be seen whether the planned German battery production will continue. Tesla boss Elon Musk has announced that he will establish the world's largest battery production facility in Germany. When asked by the media, Tesla has so far not commented on the current status and progress of battery production for the German location in the Gigafactory Grünheide.
