The protests against the expansion of the Tesla-factory in Grünheide have reached a new level of escalation. On Monday morning, the police took several environmental activists out of tree houses to allow planned explosive probes in the forest. The Tesla-opponents vehemently oppose the operation and are calling for increased protests.
Police action: not a complete eviction attempt
According to the police headquarters, the operation was not a complete eviction, but a temporary clearing of the area for exploratory work. Special police forces were deployed to remove the activists from the tree houses. So far, two people have been removed. The environmental activists are still allowed to camp outside the restricted area.
A police spokeswoman emphasized:
"It is only a matter of carrying out the explosive ordnance probes. The demonstrators are still allowed to stay outside the affected zone."
Environmental activists sharply criticize the operation
The group "Tesla-den-Hahn-abdrehen" condemns the police operation as an attack on the freedom of assembly. Karolina Drzewo, spokesperson for the organization, explained:
"Freedom of assembly is being trampled underfoot under the pretext of an explosive ordnance probe. This is another attempt to protect the interests of Elon Musk and Tesla to enforce their interests."
Since the end of February, the activists have been camping in tree houses near the Tesla-Gigafactory to protest against the planned expansion of the plant. In particular, the clearing of another forest area and the construction of a freight station are meeting with strong resistance.
Why the protest?
The expansion of the Tesla-Gigafactory in Grünheide has been a controversial topic for months. The environmental activists criticize, among other things:
- Deforestation: Part of the surrounding forest is to be cleared for the planned expansion.
