In recent days, there has been a lot of speculation about whether and when Tesla will roll out distance measurement for vehicles without ultrasonic sensors. About 5 days ago, according to Twitter user Thegreenonly, there were first signs that it could soon be so far. In addition, it was leaked that the Tesla vehicles without ultrasonic sensors, with appropriate software then no longer only display the distance to the front and rear as known, but also visually display the lateral distance to a vehicle next to it, for example, with distance lines. Now it seems that Tesla is officially rolling out the appropriate software for vehicles without ultrasonic sensors, starting in America. This new feature comes with the software version 2023.6.9. After this version is installed on the vehicle, the Tesla measures the appropriate distance to objects via the available cameras.
It is not necessary to replace the hardware. First videos on Twitter and YouTube show that Tesla can measure the distances well without ultrasonic sensors and that the measured distances are very close to the actual distances. Of course, there are also first users who show that the system does not yet work 100% and distances are not displayed correctly. However, as is well known, Tesla is doing everything it can to collect data and constantly improve the software. Ultrasound sensors are not 100% reliable either, because smaller objects that are under the corresponding sensors cannot be detected and thus display incorrect values in the vehicle.
