After more and more car manufacturers like Ford, GM or Rivian in America announced in the last weeks to install the Tesla NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging plug in the future to enable their customers to access the numerous installed Tesla charging stations, now also Electrify America and Blink announce to equip their chargers with NACS plugs.
To explain, NACS - formerly known as the Tesla Charging Plug - is a proprietary charging plug system for electric vehicles developed by Tesla.
Electrify America's goal is to offer a NACS connector option at existing and future DC fast charging stations by 2025. It is the largest open DC fast charging network in the U.S., with more than 850 charging stations and about 4,000 individual chargers in the U.S. and Canada. Blink says it will begin producing NACS DC fast chargers in October 2023 and will also offer NACS connectors for its Level 2 chargers. Unlike Electrify America, Blink does not specify that it will add NACS connectors to its existing chargers.
So it's no surprise that Volkswagen is apparently also considering equipping its electric cars in North America with a Tesla charging plug. "The Volkswagen Group and its brands are currently evaluating the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for their North American customers," the group told Reuters. However, we assume that the Volkswagen Group will also not hesitate much longer and make the official announcement to equip its own vehicles with the NACS plug in the future.
