The former Tesla-manager Jon McNeill spoke at the World Business Forum about the development of the Tesla-robotaxis and also explained why it is so difficult for start-ups in the e-car sector to survive in the long term. As a long-time insider at Tesla and current CEO of DVx Ventures, McNeill provided interesting insights into the strategy and challenges of Tesla - especially in relation to the ambitious goal of a self-driving cab.
Tesla and the robotaxi disappointment
Tesla has been working for years to autopilot software and ultimately a fully autonomous robotaxi. So far, however, Tesla's level of autonomy is limited to level 2 which means that drivers still have to remain attentive and monitor the car. In contrast, competitors such as Waymo and Cruise already Level 4where the vehicles can drive without human supervision under certain conditions.
During a recent Tesla-event, CEO Elon Musk presented only 20 prototypes of the Robotaxi, without a precise roadmap for a market launch. McNeill was surprised and expected a more concrete roadmap to boost customer confidence. "Elon Musk often has something up his sleeve that he only unveils at a product event. But this time it was just prototypes," said McNeill.
Vision-only approach: risk or opportunity?
Tesla has long pursued a vision-only approach, using only cameras and no lidar sensors for environment detection. While this is theoretically a more cost-effective solution, McNeill doubts the practicality of this strategy: "Cameras alone have significant limitations in poor visibility, such as in rain or fog." Lidar, which can better penetrate these obstacles, could significantly improve safety in McNeill's eyes - a consideration that Tesla so far, however.
Challenge for start-ups in the e-car industry
McNeill emphasized how difficult it is for new e-car manufacturers to establish themselves in the industry. Examples such as Fisker, Rivian and Canoo show that the production of an electric car is not only technologically but also financially challenging. "It's incredibly difficult to build a car and then produce it in large numbers," explained McNeill. In addition to the high fixed costs, there are also many challenges in terms of parts procurement and software integration.
Tesla has managed to overcome these hurdles - not least thanks to the visionary leadership of Elon Musk. For start-ups without a similar leader, however, the path to automotive production is often associated with enormous losses.
Future of Tesla and the e-car market
Although Tesla is currently the top dog in the field of electromobility, the company will have to continue working on innovations in order to maintain its position. The challenges in the field of autonomous driving and the competition from established brands and new providers such as BYD are putting Tesla pressure to make further technological advances and present a clear roadmap for the robotaxi.
